Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound common in rock and shells.
Calcium carbonate is the principal cause of hard water.
Calcium carbonate is to water pipes as tartar is to teeth. Both share electrostatic attraction to the surfaces they adhere to, and both can be released from their respective surfaces by a process known as chelation.
