Tooth Surfaces

Facial Surfaces

The tooth surfaces that face the outside of your mouth and what people see when they look at you.  These include the Buccal Surface and Labial Surface.

Buccal Surface

The Facial tooth surfaces that are next to your cheek.

Labial
Surface

The Facial tooth surface that is next to your lips.

Lingual Surface


The surface of your lower teeth that are next to your tongue.

Palatal Surface


The surface of your upper teeth that are next to your tongue.

Proximal Surfaces

The surfaces of the teeth that come in contact with adjacent teeth.  These include the Mesial Surface and the Distal Surface.

Mesial Surface


The Proximal tooth surfaces that face the front of the mouth.

Distal
Surface

The Proximal tooth surfaces that face the back of the mouth.

Occlusal Surfaces


.The surface of the back (molar and premolar) teeth that is used for biting or chewing.

Cusps


 The parts of the occlusal surface that are raised.

Grooves


The parts of the occlusal surface that are indented.

Furcation

The part of the tooth where the roots come together. This area normally is under the gum and bone. Front teeth do not have furcations since they have only one root.
