Dr. Paul H. Keyes

Dr. Paul H. Keyes (May 3, 1917-February 7, 2017)

The recipient of scores of professional honors, will be remembered for his many contributions to dentistry, including the co-discovery of S. mutans as the cause of dental caries, made during his long career beginning in 1954 at the National Institute of Dental Research, one of the National Institutes of Health.

In the late 1970's and 80's, Dr. Keyes turned his attention to periodontal disease and crusaded for a paradigm shift in the way dentists diagnosed and treated periodontal disease, eschewing the traditional reliance on pocket depth measurements and bleeding in favor of microbiological testing and treating periodontal disease as an infection with anti-microbial agents.

During his long career, he was a prolific author with some 200 books, chapters, journal articles and abstracts, the most recent of which was just published last year. Dr. Keyes was also hugely popular as a lecturer both domestically and in countries all over the world.

Dr Keyes was an early supporter of Periogen encouraging us to continue on in this very tough field. Dr. Keyes changed the course of dentistry and we are forever grateful for his support and encouragement.
